What to Know About the Halogen and Incandescent Light Bulb Ban

What is the New Light Bulb Ban?

Starting August 1st, several light bulbs you’ve likely grown accustomed to for lighting your home will no longer be stocked on shelves at stores. The Department of Energy (DOE) initiated a ban on the sale of bulbs with fewer than 45 lumens per watt, which prohibits most widely used incandescent and halogen bulbs frequently used in households from being manufactured and sold.

While you’ll still be able to use these bulbs in your homes, you will no longer be able to purchase them after July 31st. The DOE made the move to ban these bulbs to benefit the environment and cut down costs for consumers.

Why LED Bulbs are Better!

If you’re just now hearing about the new bulb prohibition, don’t be alarmed! LED bulbs are better than traditional halogen lights for several reasons. Making the switch to LED lights is much more advantageous!

1. Reduced Costs

Firstly, LED bulbs last 25 to 50 times longer than incandescent bulbs, so you won’t have to replace them as frequently as other types of bulbs, saving you more money in the long run! In fact, the DOE projects that consumers will save nearly $3 billion on utility bills per year once the law goes into effect. That is money back into your pocket!

2. Energy Efficient

LED lighting is better for the environment and uses less energy than more commonly used halogen bulbs. LED lights provide more light while using 75% less energy than incandescent lights, according to the DOE. This new law is expected to cut carbon emissions by 222 million metric tons in the next 30 years. Making the switch to LED lighting cuts down on energy usage, which translates to lower utility costs for you!

3. Less Heat

Traditional lighting like halogen bulbs heat up very fast, which creates a burn hazard if you were to accidentally touch them. While LED lights heat up, they aren’t as hot. Plus, Natural Accents uses FX Luminaire lighting fixtures that have temperature sensors designed to cool fixtures as they run.
